Dragonfly: A Full Synopsis “Spoiler ALERT”
Moving around a lot has been a struggle for Bridgette. By the time she and her family are settled in their fourth home in thirteen years Bridgette finds herself growing distant from her parents, her school and even her peers. At school she becomes immersed into a dangerous crowd, where the abrasive ring- leader, Suzy manipulates them into doing things to meet her selfish desires. Realizing the strange behavior of the group, Bridgette slowly attempts to break away, befriending a quiet girl, Bitsy, whom she spots on swings telling herself stories. The two become closer, sharing their fantasy worlds with each other, laughing about the perplexity of it all and swapping Suzy horror stories.
“Oh and when Suzy gets mad, she gets MAD!”
“Did you notice that freckle on her left nostril flaring when she steams?”
“You bet. It looks like a hideous sea monster ready to attack!” They both begin laughing uncontrollably for the first time together. It was at this moment Bridgette knew they would be friends forever.
Envious of this new, as Suzy describes, “ridiculous” friendship, she plays a trick on Brigitte & Bitsy at a school dance to humiliate them, which, in turn leads Bridgette into a mysterious world of imagination, while Bitsy discovers her flute playing is not just a talent…
While alone and in punishment for causing trouble at school dance with Bitsy, Bridgette finds a dragonfly perched on a stump. The dragonfly leads her deep within the forest. From this moment on she finds herself immersed in a land where anything is possible! A land referenced as, Izzenia and within this world she discovers places like, Shady Tree Lane in Shadow’s Forest, the island of Ziantic among others. She encounters mysterious elves, rockin’ june bugs, fairies, busy beavers, bludgers – who can transform into anything, and an evil queen who relishes in control and power. Soon Bridgette learns about the queen’s grudge against a young boy referred to as, “Max, from the past.”
About ten years before Brigitte was born, Max began building a magical bridge to the Queens Castle by the sea so that the creatures from Shady Tree Lane may reach the Island of Ziantic and save the prisoners. Now, twenty-four years later, the time has come for Bridgette to complete the bridge, ultimately connecting these three worlds and bringing peace and freedom to all live there. Will Bridgette be able break the queen’s dreadful spell long enough for her to be able to return to her home in Glenbrook?
Her magical journey ends when she decides to bring her new dragonfly friend, Esee into her world, confining her to a cage. Studying and learning about Esee, she discovers similarities between herself and this strange creature and begins studying science and witchcraft. She inadvertently invents a “fairy” potion for dragonflies to become larger and more powerful. Bitsy is the only one who knows her secret, until they bring the project to, Dr. Zepear, a well-known wacky scientist in town.
He taints Bridgette science project by experimenting with different formulas on Esee without her knowledge, until one day when Bridgette and Bitsy decide to go to see the scientist early and they catch him performing spells on Esee. After a long explanation, he then convinces Bridgette to enter the science fair and the school drama begins. Her new friends -the magic games kids- smother her with attention. One boy develops a crush on her, while Suzy tells everyone in the school Bridgette is a fake and copied formula out of a book. Teachers tell her it is “inhumane” what she is doing and she is told to stop the project.
Bombarded with this input, she breaks down and retreats back to the creatures in the sea. Humiliated with herself and what she has done to Esee, she calls for Cloey, the magic sea dragon. She can no longer see Cloey but is determined to believe and continues calling out for her. Feeling overwhelmed with despair and loss of hope on her quest, she accidentally drowns in a tragic attempt to find Cloey. Bitsy arrives, attempting to rescue her, just moments too late. Her grief turns into magic and power when she discovers the meaning of Bridgette last words to her best friend, “Don’t think you can save the world and still keep your sanity. Your mom’s right, be true to yourself. Your talent and love for music will spread and give others hope and serenity for years to come. Hey, maybe one day you can be a legend!” Soon after Bridgette death Bitsy picks up her flute again, this time she is able to learn almost anything. Her music brings life throughout the quiet little town. She begins performing for the locals making money that she saves up to continue the dragonfly research that Bridgette once worked so hard on for the science fair.
Bitsy’s final words before stumbling into Izzenia herself, “Bridgette was right about everything. Well, almost everything. In fact, I did become famous and make lots of friends. But I will always hold a spot in my heart for her. I miss her so much sometimes. She has always been the most ‘real’ friend I’ve had. She was like the backbone rooting my ideas; my inspiration; the wind beneath my wings. She was always the true legend, if only she knew. In the end, she made the ultimate sacrifice for peace, freedom, beauty and truth. Esee remembers, and still mourns over her. I can see it in her patterns of flight.”
